[Epoch](/source/Epoch_Co.) released the Japan-exclusive [TV Vader](/source/TV_Vader) in 1980, which was a Space Invaders clone that could be played at home.

*[Space Invaders](/source/Space_Invaders)* is a [fixed shooter](/source/Fixed_shooter) [video game](/source/Video_game) released in 1978 by [Taito](/source/Taito_Corporation). It was designed by [Tomohiro Nishikado](/source/Tomohiro_Nishikado), who was inspired by other media such as *[Breakout](/source/Breakout_(video_game))*, *[The War of the Worlds](/source/The_War_of_the_Worlds)* and *[Star Wars](/source/Star_Wars)*.[1] It is one of the forerunners of modern video gaming and helped expand the [video game industry](/source/Video_game_industry) from a novelty to a global industry.[2][3] It was first released as an [arcade game](/source/Arcade_game) and later remade on different platforms; re-releases include [ported](/source/Porting) and updated versions. Ported versions generally feature different graphics and additional gameplay options, including moving defense bunkers, zigzag shots, invisible aliens, and [two-player](/source/Multiplayer_video_game) modes.[4] *Space Invaders* is one of the [highest-grossing video game franchises](/source/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises) of all time.

Taito released numerous sequels and spin-offs, many of which have also been remade on multiple platforms, including home consoles and handheld devices. Follow up titles are typically released in celebration of the original's anniversary. The first sequels were primarily released in arcades, while later titles were released on portable devices. Sequels often added [power-ups](/source/Power-up) and incorporated new gameplay mechanics—like [three-dimensional](/source/3D_computer_graphics) playing fields, [bosses](/source/Boss_(video_gaming)), and [rhythm-action](/source/Rhythm_game)—to the original's design.[5] Most titles were released internationally, though some are exclusive to select regions. The games have received different receptions: the [Atari 2600](/source/Atari_2600) port of the original became the video game industry's first "[killer app](/source/Killer_application)", while some sequels were regarded as insignificant updates.[4][6] *Space Invaders* and several of its arcade sequels are often included in video game compilations released by Taito.

It inspired numerous other games.[7] Many companies created [clones](/source/Video_game_clone) that copied its gameplay, with more than a hundred *Space Invaders* clones released for various platforms by the early 1980s (such as *[Super Invader](/source/Super_Invader_(video_game))* and *[TI Invaders](/source/TI_Invaders)*).[8][9] Others built upon the original's gameplay (such as the [*Galaxian* franchise](/source/List_of_Galaxian_video_games)). A live-action film adaptation is in development.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

## Arcade games

Game Details Space Invaders Original release date(s):[10] June 1978 Release years by system: 1978 – Arcade[10] 1980 – Atari 2600, Atari 8-bit[4] 1982 – Atari 5200, Handheld electronic games[4][11] 1985 – Nintendo Entertainment System,[4] SG-1000[12] 1999 – WonderSwan[13] 2002 – VG Pocket Caplet[14] 2007 – Mobile phone[15] 2009 – iOS[16] Notes: An urban legend blames the game for causing a shortage of yen in Japan, which led to an increase in production of 100-yen coins;[2][17] however, 100-yen coin production was lower in 1978 and 1979 than in previous or subsequent years.[18][19] The claim also doesn't hold up to logical scrutiny: arcade operators would have emptied out their machines and taken the money to the bank, thus keeping the coins in circulation.[19] Reports from those living in Japan at the time indicate "nothing out of the ordinary ... during the height of the Space Invaders invasion."[19] By 1982, it had generated US$3.8 billion in revenue.[20] Several publications attribute the expansion of the video game industry from a novelty into a global industry to the success of the game.[2][3][21][22][23] The Atari 2600 version was the first official licensing of an arcade game and became the first "killer app" by quadrupling the system's sales.[4][24] The Atari versions feature different sets of gameplay variants.[4] The handheld electronic games include LCD and VFD versions developed by Tiger Electronics and Ramtex. Clones were also created by other companies. Early 1980s handheld electronic versions are considered collectables.[11] Space Invaders Part II Original release date(s):[25][26] 1979 Release years by system: 1979 – Arcade 1990 – Game Boy and Skill for Prizes[4] Notes: It was released in the United States as Deluxe Space Invaders (also known as Space Invaders Deluxe) The United States version features a different graphical color scheme and a lunar-city background.
