**Lisa Cholodenko** is an American screenwriter and director. Cholodenko wrote and directed the films *[High Art](/source/High_Art)* (1998), *[Laurel Canyon](/source/Laurel_Canyon_(film))* (2002), and *[The Kids Are All Right](/source/The_Kids_Are_All_Right_(film))* (2010).[1][2] She has also directed television, including the miniseries *[Olive Kitteridge](/source/Olive_Kitteridge_(miniseries))* (2014) and *[Unbelievable](/source/Unbelievable_(miniseries))* (2019).[3] She has been nominated for an [Academy Award](/source/Academy_Awards) and a [Golden Globe](/source/Golden_Globe_Awards) and has won an [Emmy](/source/Emmy_Awards) and a [DGA Award](/source/Directors_Guild_of_America_Award).

## Early life and education

Cholodenko is from the San Fernando Valley, and grew up in a liberal [Jewish](/source/Jewish) family.[4][5] Her paternal grandfather emigrated from [USSR](/source/USSR).[6][*[failed verification](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verifiability)*]

Cholodenko received a [BA](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in anthropology and ethnic studies from [San Francisco State University](/source/San_Francisco_State_University), where she was a teaching assistant for [Angela Davis](/source/Angela_Davis). In the early 1990s, she was an apprentice editor on [John Singleton](/source/John_Singleton)'s *[Boyz n the Hood](/source/Boyz_n_the_Hood)*.[4] She also worked as an assistant editor on [Beeban Kidron](/source/Beeban_Kidron)'s *[Used People](/source/Used_People),* [Brett Leonard](/source/Brett_Leonard)'s *[The Lawnmower Man](/source/The_Lawnmower_Man_(film)),* and [Gus Van Sant](/source/Gus_Van_Sant)'s *[To Die For](/source/To_Die_For).* In 1997, Cholodenko received an [MFA](/source/Master_of_Fine_Arts) from [Columbia University School of the Arts](/source/Columbia_University_School_of_the_Arts) in screenwriting and directing.[7][8] While at Columbia, Cholodenko wrote and directed a number of short films, including *Souvenir* (1994) and *Dinner Party* (1997), which won the [British Film Institute](/source/British_Film_Institute)'s Channel 4 TX prize and aired on UK, French, and Swiss television.[9]

## Career

### Film

#### *High Art (1998)*

While at Columbia, Cholodenko wrote and directed her feature film debut *[High Art](/source/High_Art)*. *High Art* won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the [Sundance Film Festival](/source/Sundance_Film_Festival) as well as the National Society of Film Critics award for [Ally Sheedy](/source/Ally_Sheedy)'s performance. premiered at Cannes [Director's Fortnight](/source/Director's_Fortnight)[10] and was distributed by October Films.[11]

#### *Laurel Canyon (2002)*

Her next film *[Laurel Canyon](/source/Laurel_Canyon_(film)),* starring [Frances McDormand](/source/Frances_McDormand), [Christian Bale](/source/Christian_Bale), and [Kate Beckinsale](/source/Kate_Beckinsale), premiered at Cannes Director's Fortnight. It was nominated for multiple Independent Spirit Awards and was distributed by Sony Pictures Classics.

#### *Cavedweller (2004)*

Cholodenko directed the 2004 film *[Cavedweller](/source/Cavedweller_(film))* for [Showtime](/source/Showtime_(TV_network)).[12] It earned [Independent Spirit Award](/source/Independent_Spirit_Award) nominations for cast members [Kyra Sedgwick](/source/Kyra_Sedgwick) and [Aidan Quinn](/source/Aidan_Quinn).[13]

#### *The Kids are All Right (2010)*

Cholodenko next co-wrote and directed *[The Kids Are All Right](/source/The_Kids_Are_All_Right_(film)).* She was nominated for an [Academy Award](/source/Academy_Awards) for Best Original Screenplay. The film was nominated for another 3 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won a [Golden Globe](/source/Golden_Globe_Awards) for Best Picture, Comedy or Musical. Filmed in 23 days, Cholodenko directed the film on a $3.5 million budget, a much smaller amount than her fellow 2011 Oscar nominees. The film was made with three different sources of equity financing, with [Focus Features](/source/Focus_Features) picking up the film for distribution.[8][14]

### Television

In 2014, Cholodenko directed the [HBO](/source/HBO) four-part mini-series *[Olive Kitteridge](/source/Olive_Kitteridge_(miniseries))* starring [Frances McDormand](/source/Frances_McDormand) and [Richard Jenkins](/source/Richard_Jenkins). *Olive Kitteridge* is based on the [novel of the same name](/source/Olive_Kitteridge) by [Elizabeth Strout](/source/Elizabeth_Strout).[15] [Bill Murray](/source/Bill_Murray), [Jesse Plemons](/source/Jesse_Plemons), [Zoe Kazan](/source/Zoe_Kazan), and [John Gallagher Jr.](/source/John_Gallagher_Jr.) co-starred.[16] *[Olive Kitteridge](/source/Olive_Kitteridge_(miniseries))* premiered at the 2014 [Venice Film Festival](/source/Venice_Film_Festival) to overwhelmingly positive reviews.[17][18] The show received widespread critical acclaim when it premiered on television in November. It received three [Golden Globe](/source/Golden_Globe) nominations, and Cholodenko received a [Directors Guild Award](/source/Directors_Guild_of_America_Award_for_Outstanding_Directing_-_Television_Film) and a [Primetime Emmy Award](/source/Primetime_Emmy_Award) for [Outstanding Directing](/source/Primetime_Emmy_Award_for_Outstanding_Directing_for_a_Miniseries%2C_Movie_or_a_Dramatic_Special) for her work on the miniseries.[19][20]

In 2018, Cholodenko was an executive producer and directed the first three episodes of Netflix's limited series *[Unbelievable](/source/Unbelievable_(miniseries)).*[21] Based on the 2015 news article "[An Unbelievable Story of Rape](/source/An_Unbelievable_Story_of_Rape)" written by Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong,[21] the show received universal acclaim when it premiered in October 2019.
