**Linux XP** (pronounced *Linux ex-pee*) was a [Fedora Linux](/source/Fedora_Linux)-based[2] [shareware](/source/Shareware) [Linux distribution](/source/Linux_distribution) designed to imitate [Windows](/source/Microsoft_Windows) environment using [GNOME](/source/GNOME) desktop; it could run some [Microsoft Windows](/source/Microsoft_Windows) programs using the [Wine](/source/Wine_(software)) compatibility layer. Linux XP had to be registered within 99 startups after installation, or the OS would deactivate.[2]
