== History ==
Originally, the site was owned by Andover.net, which was taken over by VA Linux Systems (which later changed into VA Software, and then [SourceForge](/source/SourceForge), now [Geeknet](/source/Geeknet)). It was dedicated to providing news and services to the free and open source software community. The site reported 25 million hits in the first month of operation.<ref>{{Cite news |first=Matthew W. |last=Beale |date=June 17, 1999 |url=http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/535.html?wlc=1226360468 |title=Linux.Com Serves 25 Million |publisher=E-Commerce Times}}</ref>

Linux.com suspended the publication of new articles in December 2008, announcing on New Year's Day 2009 that publication would shortly resume after unspecified changes to the site; legal considerations were given as the reason why the anticipated changes were not clearly described.<ref>Linux.com staff. On March 3, 2009, the [Linux Foundation](/source/Linux_Foundation) announced that they would be taking over the management of Linux.com.<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.networkworld.com/news/2009/030309-linux-foundation-site.html |title=Linux Foundation taking over Linux.com site |author=John Fontana |publisher=[Network World](/source/Network_World) |date=2009-03-03 |access-date=2010-10-02 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110613141706/http://www.networkworld.com/news/2009/030309-linux-foundation-site.html |archive-date=2011-06-13 }}</ref>
