**Linnaeus Terrace** is a rock terrace on the north side of [Oliver Peak](/source/Oliver_Peak) in the [Asgard Range](/source/Asgard_Range) of [Victoria Land](/source/Victoria_Land), [Antarctica](/source/Antarctica). It is protected under the [Antarctic Treaty System](/source/Antarctic_Treaty_System) as [Antarctic Specially Protected Area](/source/Antarctic_Specially_Protected_Area) No.138 because it is one of the richest known sites for the [cryptoendolithic](/source/Endolith) communities that colonise the [Beacon Sandstone](/source/Beacon_Supergroup).[1]

## History

The terrace was mapped by the [United States Geological Survey](/source/United_States_Geological_Survey) from [U.S. Navy](/source/U.S._Navy) aerial photographs taken in 1970. The name was proposed to the [Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names](/source/Advisory_Committee_on_Antarctic_Names) by biologist [Imre Friedmann](/source/Imre_Friedmann) who established a [United States Antarctic Research Program](/source/United_States_Antarctic_Research_Program) field camp on this terrace in December 1980 for the study of [microbial flora](/source/Microorganism) living in rocks. The site is named after Swedish botanist [Carl Linnaeus](/source/Carl_Linnaeus), the first person to enunciate the principles for defining genera and species and to adhere to a uniform use of the [binomial system](/source/Binomial_nomenclature) for naming plants and animals.[2]
