# Linkmenys

**Linkmenys** (Polish: *Łyngmiany*) is a village located in [Ignalina District Municipality](/source/Ignalina_District_Municipality) in [Utena County](/source/Utena_County), in eastern [Lithuania](/source/Lithuania). According to the 2011 census, the village had a population of 134 inhabitants.

## History

In [Hermann von Wartberge](/source/Hermann_von_Wartberge)'s *Chronicon Livoniale* it is referred to as [Linkmenys Castle](/source/Linkmenys_Castle), which probably stood on [Ginučiai Hillfort](/source/Ginu%C4%8Diai_Hillfort). Around 1500, the local church has been erected. [Sigismund II Augustus](/source/Sigismund_II_Augustus) had a manor and a town which belonged to the manor in Linkmenys.

In 1922, 2 years after [Polish–Lithuanian War](/source/Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian_War), the Polish soldiers in Lithuanian school of Linkmenys butted the [Vytis](/source/Vytis) as "foreign state sign".[1]

During the [interwar period](/source/Interwar_period), the village was split by the Polish-Lithuanian demarcation line, however the bigger part of the village was part of [Poland](/source/Second_Polish_Republic). Administratively, it was located in Święciany County in [Wilno Voivodeship](/source/Wilno_Voivodeship_(1926%E2%80%931939)).

### World War II

During World War II, it was first [invaded](/source/Invasion_of_Poland) and occupied by the [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union) until 1941, and then by [Nazi Germany](/source/Nazi_Germany) until 1944. In mid-July 1941, 70 Jewish men, women and children were murdered in a mass execution perpetrated by an [Einsatzgruppen](/source/Einsatzgruppen) and Lithuanian collaborators.[2] A memorial stone is erected at the site of the massacre.
