# Link level

In [computer networking](/source/Computer_network), in the hierarchical structure of a primary or secondary station, link level is the conceptual level of control or [data processing](/source/Data_processing) logic that controls the [data link](/source/Data_link).

Link-level functions provide an [interface](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/interface) between the station high-level logic and the data link. Link-level functions include (a) transmit [bit](/source/Bit) injection and receive bit extraction, (b) [address](/source/Network_address) and [control field](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Control_field&action=edit&redlink=1) interpretation, (c) [command](/source/Command_(computing)) response generation, [transmission](/source/Transmission_(telecommunications)) and interpretation, and (d) [frame check sequence](/source/Frame_check_sequence) computation and interpretation.
