**Link Motion** is an automotive software and [hardware company](/source/Electronic_hardware) developing [embedded automotive systems](/source/Embedded_system) that have been used in the [Lamborghini Huracán](/source/Lamborghini_Hurac%C3%A1n).[1][2] Their main product is the Motion T [carputer](/source/Carputer) which can implement a [connected vehicle](/source/Connected_car) gateway as a separate unit or as a part of the cockpit solution (eCockpit).[3] The Motion T carputer runs on [NXP](/source/NXP_Semiconductors)'s [i.MX8](/source/I.MX#i.MX_8_series) multi-[OS](/source/Operating_system) platform, supports four in-car [HD displays](/source/High-definition_video) and hosts connectivity features on [Microsoft’s](/source/Microsoft) connected vehicle platform,[4] a set of services built on the [Microsoft Azure](/source/Microsoft_Azure) cloud, such as [over-the-air](/source/Over-the-air_programming) software and [firmware](/source/Firmware) updates, [telemetry](/source/Telemetry) and [diagnostics](/source/Diagnosis) data and secure [remote access](/source/Remote_keyless_system).[5]

## How it works

Link Motion is a next generation on-board unit hardware and [open source](/source/Open-source_model) powered secure software platform that enables integration of features for connected and [smart cars](/source/Vehicular_automation). Link Motion uses [Linux](/source/Linux) and [Qt](/source/Qt_(software)) to implement several previously discrete [ECU](/source/Electronic_control_unit) with one computer and relies on [ARM TrustZone](/source/ARM_TrustZone) and [virtualization](/source/Virtualization) to protect critical system functions from vulnerabilities. An [AUTOSAR](/source/AUTOSAR) based operating system in the heart of the carputer is responsible for controlling safety-critical functions and vehicle communication on the [controller-area network (CAN bus)](/source/CAN_bus). It supports central unit, [instrument cluster](/source/Dashboard) and [head-up displays](/source/Head-up_display), [rear-view cameras](/source/Backup_camera), [CANopen](/source/CANopen) protocol and it offers connectivity through [cellular](/source/Cellular_network), [vehicle-to-everything (V2X)](/source/Vehicle-to-everything), [WiFi](/source/Wi-Fi) and [Bluetooth](/source/Bluetooth) connections as well as location services using [GPS](/source/Global_Positioning_System), [GLONASS](/source/GLONASS) and [BeiDou](/source/BeiDou_Navigation_Satellite_System).[6] Data is shared and stored in the [cloud](/source/Cloud_computing), and a [platform](/source/Platform_as_a_service) that supports both custom [connected car](/source/Connected_car) services and others such as [Apple](/source/Apple_Inc.) [CarPlay](/source/CarPlay), [Baidu](/source/Baidu) Carlife[7] or [Android Auto](/source/Android_Auto).[1] Vehicle data can be captured with [on-board diagnostics](/source/On-board_diagnostics) (OBD) which is available using standard [OBD-II PIDs](/source/OBD-II_PIDs).[8]

## New Development

Link Motion will further enhance its carputer into a “CarBrain” platform, using [artificial intelligence](/source/Artificial_intelligence) (AI) and blockchain [applications](/source/Application_software) to make [vehicles](/source/Vehicle) a more [intelligent](/source/Intelligent_transportation_system) part of the [traffic](/source/Traffic) [ecosystem](/source/Ecosystem).[9] They have also integrated Keystone into the platform which is Irdeto’s new [smartphone](/source/Smartphone)-based [vehicle access](/source/Smart_key) solution that allows vehicle owners to create and control policies around multi-user vehicle access, settings and usage including ECU-side functionality and [cloud services](/source/Cloud_computing), as well as a complete [back-end management system](/source/Mobile_backend_as_a_service) with [analytics](/source/Analytics).[10]

## History

Founded in 2001 to develop [embedded Linux systems](/source/Linux_on_embedded_systems) the company was originally called Nomovok. That led to developing [mobile operating systems](/source/Mobile_operating_system) for [Nokia](/source/Nokia) and others.[11]

In 2006 they started working on automotive software and [embedded automotive systems](/source/Embedded_system). Then in 2014 the company was re-branded to Link Motion.[12]

In October 2014, [Tieto](/source/Tieto), Link Motion and Nomovok announced their collaboration on Link Motion.[13]

In January 2015, Link Motion and MTA SpA announced their collaboration on Link Motion.[14]

In March 2015, Link Motion and [Red Bend](/source/Red_Bend_Software) announced strategic cooperation for an [over-the-air](/source/Over-the-air_programming) (OTA) software update solution for Link Motion.[15]

In the summer of 2015 [NQ Mobile](/source/NQ_Mobile) took a controlling stake in Link Motion.[16]

In August 2016, Link Motion announced it will use [Qt technology](/source/The_Qt_Company) for the development of the [user interface](/source/User_interface).[17]

In September 2016, Link Motion became a member of the [Linux Foundation](/source/Linux_Foundation) and [Automotive Grade Linux](/source/Automotive_Grade_Linux) (AGL).[18]

In November 2016, Finland's first [autonomous passenger car](/source/Autonomous_car) is pilot licensed. Named Marilyn the car is being developed in the [VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland](/source/VTT_Technical_Research_Centre_of_Finland).[19]

In January 2017, Link Motion implemented Cloakware for Automotive by Irdeto into Link Motion’s connected carputer, Motion T.[20]

In May 2017, Finland's first autonomous passenger car is allowed to drive in city traffic.[21]

In November 2017, Link Motion joined the IETA3 APPSTACLE [22] project which aims to include an open and secure car-to-cloud and cloud-to-car platform that interconnects a wide range of cars and transport vehicles to the cloud via open in-car and [Internet connection](/source/Internet_access), taking advantage of [5G](/source/5G) opportunities.[23]

In December 2017, a partnership with [Chery](/source/Chery) was announced to develop a connected car platform.[24]

In January 2018, Link Motion was selected as the platform vendor for [pure](/source/Battery_electric_vehicle)[electric buses](/source/Electric_bus) in the city of [Qingdao](/source/Qingdao) for [public transportation](/source/Public_transport) vehicles by extending their existing [passenger car](/source/Car) platform.[25][26]

In March 2018, Link Motion announced integration of Keystone into the Link Motion CarBrain platform.[27]
