# Lindsay Powell

**Lindsay Powell** is an American politician. A [Democrat](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)), she is a member of the [Pennsylvania House of Representatives](/source/Pennsylvania_House_of_Representatives), representing the [21st district](/source/Pennsylvania_House_of_Representatives,_District_21). She was elected in a 2023 special election to succeed [Sara Innamorato](/source/Sara_Innamorato), who resigned on July 19, 2023, to focus on her campaign for [Allegheny County Executive](/source/2023_Allegheny_County_Executive_election).[1][2]

## Early life and education

A [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn) native, Powell graduated with a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree in [sociology](/source/Sociology) from [Wheaton College](/source/Wheaton_College_(Massachusetts)).[3] Later, she graduated with a [Master of Science](/source/Master_of_Science) in [public policy management](/source/Public_policy) from [Carnegie Mellon University](/source/Carnegie_Mellon_University). Powell spent time teaching English in rural [Malaysia](/source/Malaysia) after receiving the [Fulbright Scholarship](/source/Fulbright_Program).[4]

## Career

Powell has previously worked as an Assistant Chief of Staff for the City of [Pittsburgh](/source/Pittsburgh), focusing on city legislative priorities and department policy. Powell has also worked for Senator [Chuck Schumer](/source/Chuck_Schumer) and Representative [Hakeem Jeffries](/source/Hakeem_Jeffries).[4]

On July 19, 2023, then-incumbent Representative [Sara Innamorato](/source/Sara_Innamorato) announced her resignation from the State House following her victory in the primary for [Allegheny County](/source/Allegheny_County,_Pennsylvania) [Executive](/source/County_executive) in May 2023.[5] Later that month, the Allegheny County Democratic Committee selected Powell from a group of five candidates to be their nominee in the September [special election](/source/By-election) to replace Innamorato.[2] Powell defeated [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)) Erin Connolly Autenreith with 65% of the vote.[6] Powell was subsequently sworn in on October 2, 2023.[7]
