'''Lindores''' is a small village in [Fife](/source/Fife), Scotland, in the parish of [Abdie](/source/Abdie), about 2 miles south-east of [Newburgh](/source/Newburgh%2C_Fife). It is situated on the north-east shore of [Lindores Loch](/source/Lindores_Loch), a 44 ha freshwater [loch](/source/loch). A possible derivation of the name ''Lindores'' is 'church by the water'. The ruins of Abdie church, about 0.5 miles south-west of the village are possibly the site of an ancient shrine connected to the Celtic foundation at [Abernethy](/source/Abernethy%2C_Perth_and_Kinross). After the foundation of [Lindores Abbey](/source/Lindores_Abbey) in 1191 the church was given to the abbey.

The [Abdie stone](/source/Abdie_stone), a [Pictish](/source/Picts) stone dating from the 6th or 7th century stood on a nearby ridge until around 1850,<ref>{{Historic Environment Scotland|cat=PLA |num=30019 |num2=NO21NE 10 |desc=Abdie Churchyard, 'Lindores Stone' |access-date=20 June 2025}}</ref> but is now in the church yard housed in a modified [morthouse](/source/morthouse).

Traces of an ancient castle, thought to have belonged to Macduff, [Thane of Fife](/source/Thane_of_Fife), have been found at the eastern end of the village.<ref name="gfs">{{cite web |title=Lindores, Fife |url=https://www.scottish-places.info/towns/townfirst2625.html |website=Gazetteer for Scotland |access-date=19 August 2021}}</ref> The battle of [Black Irnsyde](/source/Action_at_Earnside), at which [William Wallace](/source/William_Wallace) defeated [Aymer de Valence](/source/Aymer_de_Valence%2C_2nd_Earl_of_Pembroke), the 2nd [Earl of Pembroke](/source/Earl_of_Pembroke), is claimed to have been fought near the village, though this does not fit with known historical facts.

Lindores had [a station](/source/Lindores_railway_station) on the [Newburgh and North Fife Railway](/source/Newburgh_and_North_Fife_Railway) which was open to passengers between 1909 and 1951. The railway has since been lifted.
