# Lin McCarthy

**Linwood Winder McCarthy** (February 23, 1918 – November 23, 2002) was an American film, television and theatre actor.[1]

## Early life

Born in [Norfolk, Virginia](/source/Norfolk,_Virginia),[2] McCarthy served in the [military](/source/Military) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II), and afterwards studied acting at Geller's Theatre Workshop.[2]

## Career

He made his stage debut in 1952 in the Broadway play *The Chase*.[2][3] McCarthy guest-starred in numerous television programs, including *[Boris Karloff's Thriller](/source/Boris_Karloff's_Thriller)*, *[The Man and the Challenge](/source/The_Man_and_the_Challenge)*, *[Mission: Impossible](/source/Mission:_Impossible_(1966_TV_series))*, *[The Fugitive](/source/The_Fugitive_(1963_TV_series))*, *[Tales of Wells Fargo](/source/Tales_of_Wells_Fargo)*, *[The Rifleman](/source/The_Rifleman)*, *[Gunsmoke](/source/Gunsmoke)*, *[Robert Montgomery Presents](/source/Robert_Montgomery_Presents)*, *[New Comedy Showcase](/source/New_Comedy_Showcase)*, *[Wagon Train](/source/Wagon_Train)*, *[Quincy, M.E.](/source/Quincy,_M.E.)*, *[12 O'Clock High](/source/12_O'Clock_High_(TV_series))*, *[Rawhide](/source/Rawhide_(TV_series))*, *[Studio One in Hollywood](/source/Studio_One_(American_TV_series))*, *[Lou Grant](/source/Lou_Grant_(TV_series))*, *[Kraft Television Theatre](/source/Kraft_Television_Theatre)*, *[The Waltons](/source/The_Waltons)* and *[The Virginian](/source/The_Virginian_(TV_series))*.[4] He also appeared in films such as *[Yellowneck](/source/Yellowneck)*, *[Tail Gunner Joe](/source/Tail_Gunner_Joe)*, *[The D.I.](/source/The_D.I.)*, *[Face of a Fugitive](/source/Face_of_a_Fugitive)*, *[The Execution of Private Slovik](/source/The_Execution_of_Private_Slovik)* and *[The Day After](/source/The_Day_After)*.[4] McCarthy retired in 1984.[2]

## Death

McCarthy died on November 23, 2002 of [pneumonia](/source/Pneumonia) in [Beverly Hills, California](/source/Beverly_Hills,_California), at the age of 84.[2][5]
