The **Limestone Way** is a waymarked long-distance [footpath](/source/Rights_of_way_in_England_and_Wales) in [Derbyshire](/source/Derbyshire), England. It runs for 46 miles (74 km) through the [White Peak](/source/White_Peak) of the [Peak District National Park](/source/Peak_District_National_Park), from [Castleton](/source/Castleton%2C_Derbyshire) south to [Rocester](/source/Rocester) over the county boundary into [Staffordshire](/source/Staffordshire). The trail is named for the [limestone](/source/Limestone) scenery along its route. It was devised by Brian Spencer of Matlock [Rotary Club](/source/Rotary_Club) and developed and opened in 1986 by the [West Derbyshire District Council](/source/Derbyshire_Dales) (which became [Derbyshire Dales District Council](/source/Derbyshire_Dales) in 1987). It originally ran to [Matlock](/source/Matlock%2C_Derbyshire), but was extended to its current, longer route in 1992 to join up with the [Staffordshire Way](/source/Staffordshire_Way).[1][2][3]

## The route

From Castleton, the route runs up [Cave Dale](/source/Cave_Dale), past the village of [Peak Forest](/source/Peak_Forest), down [Hay Dale](/source/Hay_Dale) (shared with the [Peak District Boundary Walk](/source/Peak_District_Boundary_Walk)) and along [Peter Dale](/source/Peter_Dale_(Derbyshire)). It then runs parallel to [Monk's Dale](/source/Monk's_Dale) and through the village of [Millers Dale](/source/Millers_Dale) (passing under the viaduct which carries the [Monsal Trail](/source/Monsal_Trail) and crossing the [River Wye](/source/River_Wye%2C_Derbyshire)).[4]

It then crosses the A6 near the Waterloo Inn and over Taddington Moor. The trail follows old miners' tracks through the villages of [Flagg](/source/Flagg%2C_Derbyshire) and [Monyash](/source/Monyash), across [Cales Dale](/source/Cales_Dale) and past [Youlgreave](/source/Youlgreave) along the [River Bradford](/source/River_Bradford) through [Bradford Dale](/source/Bradford_Dale). The route then continues across [Harthill Moor](/source/Harthill_Moor) (past the rock outcrops of [Robin Hood's Stride](/source/Robin_Hood's_Stride) and Cratcliffe Rocks), following the ancient Portway track[5] past the village of [Elton](/source/Elton%2C_Derbyshire), around [Winster](/source/Winster) and [Bonsall](/source/Bonsall%2C_Derbyshire) and through [Grangemill](/source/Grangemill) (across the Via Gellia road), after which it crosses the [Midshires Way](/source/Midshires_Way) and the [High Peak Trail](/source/High_Peak_Trail). The trail then passes north of [Brassington](/source/Brassington), past Rainster Rocks and runs through the ancient hamlet of [Ballidon](/source/Ballidon). The route goes into the village of [Parwich](/source/Biggin_(Dovedale_and_Parwich_Ward)) and then crosses the [Tissington Trail](/source/Tissington_Trail) before running through [Tissington](/source/Tissington) itself and onto [Thorpe](/source/Thorpe%2C_Derbyshire).[4][6]

The trail crosses into Staffordshire over the [River Dove](/source/River_Dove%2C_Central_England) at Coldwall Bridge and then down into [Dovedale](/source/Dovedale) at [Ellastone](/source/Ellastone) on its approach to the Roman settlement of Rocester.[4]
