**Limerick County Council** (Irish: *Comhairle Contae Luimnigh*) was the [local authority](/source/Local_government_in_the_Republic_of_Ireland) of [County Limerick](/source/County_Limerick), [Ireland](/source/Republic_of_Ireland), from 1899 to 2014. As a [county council](/source/County_council), it was governed by the [Local Government Act 2001](/source/Local_Government_Act_2001). The head of the council had the title of [Cathaoirleach](/source/Cathaoirleach_(local_government)) (chairperson).

## History

Limerick County Council was established on 1 April 1899 under the [Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898](/source/Local_Government_(Ireland)_Act_1898) for the [administrative county](/source/Administrative_county) of [County Limerick](/source/County_Limerick), succeeding the former judicial county of Limerick.[1][2][3][4]

The county council was originally based at [Limerick Courthouse](/source/Limerick_Courthouse) and then moved to County Buildings in [O'Connell Street](/source/O'Connell_Street,_Limerick) in two stages; Nos. 82 and 83 were acquired in 1911 and Nos. 80 and 81 in 1966.[5][6] The county council then moved to [County Hall](/source/Civic_Offices,_Limerick), [Dooradoyle](/source/Dooradoyle) in 2003.[7] Limerick County Council was also responsible for a large proportion of [Limerick](/source/Limerick) city's suburbs. The remaining areas of Limerick city were under the authority of [Limerick City Council](/source/Limerick_City_Council) which was a separate authority.

On 28 June 2011, the [Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government](/source/Minister_for_the_Environment,_Community_and_Local_Government) [Phil Hogan](/source/Phil_Hogan) announced that [Limerick City Council](/source/Limerick_City_Council) and Limerick County Council would be merged into a single local authority.[8] The merger would come into effect following the [2014 local elections](/source/2014_Irish_local_elections), at which there was a single [2014 Limerick City and County Council election](/source/2014_Limerick_City_and_County_Council_election). The first steps in this merger was the appointment of Conn Murray as the dual manager of both [Limerick City Council](/source/Limerick_City_Council) and Limerick County Council.

It was abolished in 2014 when the [Local Government Reform Act 2014](/source/Local_Government_Reform_Act_2014) was implemented.[9] The new authority, [Limerick City and County Council](/source/Limerick_City_and_County_Council), came into being on 1 June 2014.[9]

## Elections

The [Local Government (Ireland) Act 1919](/source/Local_Government_(Ireland)_Act_1919) introduced the [electoral system](/source/Electoral_system) of [proportional representation](/source/Proportional_representation) by means of the [single transferable vote](/source/Single_transferable_vote) (PR-STV) for the [1920 Irish local elections](/source/1920_Irish_local_elections).[10][11]
