**Lima** (Spanish pronunciation: [\[ˈli.ma\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Spanish)), also called **Metropolitan Lima** ([Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): *Lima Metropolitana*),[2] is a [province](/source/Provinces_of_Peru) of the [department of Lima](/source/Department_of_Lima), [Peru](/source/Peru). Located in its central coast, it operates under a [quasi-autonomous special regime](/source/Regional_governments_of_Peru), and is thus not under the jurisdiction of the department's [regional government](/source/Regional_Government_of_Lima). Its capital is [Lima](/source/Lima), which is also the nation's capital.

Despite its small area, this province is the major [industrial](/source/Industrial_sector) and [economic](/source/Economic_system) powerhouse of the Peruvian economy. It concentrates almost one-third of the country's population and 50% of Peru's [GDP](/source/Gross_Domestic_Product) in 2012.

## History

The province was created in 1821, as Peru's territory was divided into [departments](/source/Departments_of_Peru), [provinces](/source/Provinces_of_Peru), [districts](/source/Districts_of_Peru) and [parishes](/source/Parish). The province was part of the [department of Lima](/source/Lima_Department), which was formed by the territories of present-day [Lima](/source/Lima_Region), [Callao](/source/Callao_Region) and [Ica](/source/Ica_Region) regions, and the provinces of [Casma](/source/Casma_Province), [Huarmey](/source/Huarmey_Province) and [Santa](/source/Santa_Province), which later would be part of the *La Costa Department*.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

The department was further subdivided as time passed but the province of Lima kept being part of it. Due to the massive migration from other areas of the country, the need to separate the province from the rest of the department was forecast by experts.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

In 2002, the new regionalization law passed by President [Alejandro Toledo](/source/Alejandro_Toledo) made the province a quasi-autonomous entity, as it was not under the jurisdiction of the newly created [Regional Government of Lima](/source/Regional_Government_of_Lima).[2]

## Politics

The province of Lima is administered by the [Metropolitan Municipality of Lima](/source/Metropolitan_Municipality_of_Lima), equal in status to a [regional government](/source/Regional_governments_of_Peru), which also administers [Lima District](/source/Lima_District).

### Subdivisions

The province is divided into [43 districts](/source/Districts_of_Lima). Each of them is headed by a [mayor](/source/Mayor), although the [Metropolitan Municipality of Lima](/source/Metropolitan_Municipality_of_Lima) (*Municipalidad Metropolitana de Lima*), led by the [mayor of Lima](/source/Mayor_of_Lima), also exercises its authority in these districts. These districts are grouped together into four sectors: Central Lima, [North Lima](/source/Cono_Norte), [East Lima](/source/Cono_Este), and [South Lima](/source/Cono_Sur_(Lima)).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

All the districts of Lima province are fused together in a continuous [urban area](/source/Lima_metropolitan_area), with the exception of the [beach resort](/source/Beach_resort) of [Ancón](/source/Anc%C3%B3n_District) and [Santa Rosa](/source/Santa_Rosa_District%2C_Lima) in the north and [Punta Hermosa](/source/Punta_Hermosa), [Punta Negra](/source/Punta_Negra_District), [San Bartolo](/source/San_Bartolo_District), [Santa Maria del Mar](/source/Santa_Mar%C3%ADa_del_Mar_District_(Peru)) and [Pucusana](/source/Pucusana_District) in the south.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]
