De Castella was born Elizabeth Anne Anderson at [Norfolk Island](/source/Norfolk_Island), one of four daughters of Lieutenant-Colonel [Joseph Anderson](/source/Joseph_Anderson_(Commandant)), a military officer of the [50th Regiment of Foot](/source/50th_(Queen's_Own)_Regiment_of_Foot) and a statesman, and Mary Anderson, a pioneer member of the [Melbourne Mechanics' Institute](/source/Melbourne_Mechanics'_Institute).<ref name= adb>{{Cite book|url=https://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/castella-paul-frederic-de-3337|title=Cultural Advice|first=K.
