# Lierbyen

**Lierbyen** is the administrative center of [Lier](/source/Lier,_Norway) municipality in [Buskerud](/source/Buskerud) county, Norway. The village is situated on the Lierelva River in the valley of Lierdalen which extends from [Drammensfjord](/source/Drammensfjord) north toward [Sylling](/source/Sylling) near [Tyrifjorden](/source/Tyrifjorden). Lierbyen is located about 39 km from [Oslo](/source/Oslo), about 8 km from [Drammen](/source/Drammen) off [European route E18](/source/European_route_E18). Lierbyen is a part of a greater urban area which also encompasses the villages Lier, [Reistad](/source/Reistad) and Kjellstad. The urban area has a population of 4,233 (2007).[1][2][3][4][5]

Lierbyen was the birthplace of [Hans Christian Heg](/source/Hans_Christian_Heg), who emigrated in 1840 with his parents to [Muskego, Wisconsin](/source/Muskego,_Wisconsin). Heg served as a colonel and brigade commander in the [Union Army](/source/Union_Army) in the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War). Heg organized the [15th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment](/source/15th_Wisconsin_Volunteer_Regiment) at [Madison, Wisconsin](/source/Madison,_Wisconsin). More popularly known as the Scandinavian Regiment, the majority of its members were immigrants from Norway, or other Scandinavian countries. His statue by [Paul Fjelde](/source/Paul_Fjelde) was raised in [Madison, Wisconsin](/source/Madison,_Wisconsin), with a cast erected in his home village.[6][7]
