**Liberty Cap** is a [granite dome](/source/Granite_dome) in [Yosemite National Park](/source/Yosemite_National_Park), California, United States which lies at the extreme northwestern margin of Little Yosemite Valley. It lies adjacent, to the north of [Nevada Fall](/source/Nevada_Fall), on the [John Muir Trail](/source/John_Muir_Trail). It rises 1,700 feet (520 m) feet from the base of Nevada Fall to a peak elevation of 7,080 ft (2,158 m). A smaller, mesa-like dome called [Mount Broderick](/source/Mount_Broderick) stands immediately adjacent to Liberty Cap.

## Origin of the name

[California Governor](/source/California_Governor) [Leland Stanford](/source/Leland_Stanford) visited [Yosemite](/source/Yosemite_Valley) in 1865, and he and [James Hutchings](/source/James_Hutchings) visited [Nevada Fall](/source/Nevada_Fall). Stanford didn't like any proposed names, and, looking at [half-dollar](/source/Half_cent_(United_States_coin)) reputably produced by Hutchings, saw a resemblance between the Liberty Cap and the [coin](/source/Coin)'s [cap of liberty](/source/Cap_of_liberty) and decided the name better,.[4]

## Climbing

The easiest routes starts at [Happy Isles](/source/Happy_Isles) in [Yosemite Valley](/source/Yosemite_Valley) and follow either the [John Muir Trail](/source/John_Muir_Trail) or the [Mist Trail](/source/Mist_Trail) to the top of [Nevada Falls](/source/Nevada_Falls). Cross the bridge over the [Merced River](/source/Merced_River) and climb the short ridge. From the granite slabs on the ridge ascend the Northeast Gully ([class 2–3](/source/Yosemite_Decimal_System)) to the summit.[3]

There are a number of [technical routes](/source/Technical_climb) on Liberty Cap ranging in difficulty from class 5.8 to 5.11.[3]

Climbing Liberty Cap requires a wilderness permit, obtainable at all Yosemite visitor centers.
