She made a career based in Germany, at the [Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden](/source/Hessisches_Staatstheater_Wiesbaden), the [Staatsoper Berlin](/source/Staatsoper_Berlin) and the [Cologne Opera](/source/Cologne_Opera), and appeared at international major opera houses and festivals, such as the [Bayreuth Festival](/source/Bayreuth_Festival). She appeared mostly in dramatic roles such as Beethoven's [Fidelio](/source/Fidelio), and Wagner's Sieglinde, Brünnhilde and Isolde. She also performed in contemporary operas, creating the role of Countess de la Roche in Zimmermann's *[Die Soldaten](/source/Die_Soldaten)* in Cologne in 1965, conducted by [Michael Gielen](/source/Michael_Gielen). ## Career Born in Vienna,[1] where she studied with [Helene Wildbrunn](/source/Helene_Wildbrunn) and [Anna Bahr-Mildenburg](/source/Anna_Bahr-Mildenburg).[1] In 1950, she won a singing competition in Vienna. She was a member of the [Theater Würzburg](/source/Mainfranken_Theater_W%C3%BCrzburg) from 1951, moved to the [Opernhaus Wuppertal](/source/Opernhaus_Wuppertal) the following season, and in 1954 to the [Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden](/source/Hessisches_Staatstheater_Wiesbaden), where she remained for the rest of her career. She made had a contract also with the [Staatsoper Berlin](/source/Staatsoper_Berlin) from 1958 to 1971, and with the [Cologne Opera](/source/Cologne_Opera) from 1962 to 1975. In Cologne, she appeared in the title role of Beethoven's *[Fidelio](/source/Fidelio)*. On 15 February 1965, she created there the role of the Countess de la Roche in the world premiere of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's opera *[Die Soldaten](/source/Die_Soldaten)*.[1] The performance, with [Edith Gabry](/source/Edith_Gabry) as Marie, and conducted by [Michael Gielen](/source/Michael_Gielen), was recorded, and the recording won the award [Grand Prix du Disque](/source/Grand_Prix_du_Disque).[2] Synek appeared often with the [Frankfurt Opera](/source/Frankfurt_Opera), including a guest performance of the company in 1963 at [Sadler's Wells Opera](/source/Sadler's_Wells_Opera) in London, again playing Fidelio. She was also a frequent guest at the [Vienna State Opera](/source/Vienna_State_Opera).[1] Her roles there included Ursula in Hindemith's *[Mathis der Maler](/source/Mathis_der_Maler)* and Amelia in Verdi's *[Un ballo in maschera](/source/Un_ballo_in_maschera)* in 1958, Chrysothemis in *[Elektra](/source/Elektra_(opera))* by Richard Strauss in 1960, Venus in Wagner's *[Tannhäuser](/source/Tannh%C3%A4user_(opera))* in 1972, Kundry in his *[Parsifal](/source/Parsifal)*, Brünnhilde in his *[Die Walküre](/source/Die_Walk%C3%BCre)* in 1974, and the title role in von Einem's *[Der Besuch der alten Dame (opera)](/source/Der_Besuch_der_alten_Dame_(opera))* in 1980.[3] She appeared at the [Bayreuth Festival](/source/Bayreuth_Festival) first in 1951, singing in the choir. From 1965 to 1970, she appeared there as Helmwige in *Die Walküre*, from 1968 also as the First Norn in *[Götterdämmerung](/source/G%C3%B6tterd%C3%A4mmerung)*.[1] She appeared as a guest internationally, appearing at the [Paris Opera](/source/Paris_Opera) in 1959 as Elisabeth in *Tannhäuser*. She was a guest at the [Teatro Nacional de São Carlos](/source/Teatro_Nacional_de_S%C3%A3o_Carlos) in Lisbon and at the [Theatro Municipal](/source/Theatro_Municipal_(Rio_de_Janeiro)) of Rio de Janeiro in 1961. The following year, she sang in Fidelio at the [Teatro di San Carlo](/source/Teatro_di_San_Carlo) in Naples, and was Brünnhilde in Wagner's *[Der Ring des Nibelungen](/source/Der_Ring_des_Nibelungen)* at [La Monnaie](/source/La_Monnaie) in Brussels. She performed in Rome, [Turin](/source/Turin) and [Parma](/source/Parma) in the 1962/63 season. In 1963, she performed as Sieglinde in *Die Walküre* at [La Scala](/source/La_Scala) in Milan, and appeared at the [Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux](/source/Grand_Th%C3%A9%C3%A2tre_de_Bordeaux). She sang Schoenberg's monodrama *[Erwartung](/source/Erwartung)* at the [Maggio Musicale Fiorentino](/source/Maggio_Musicale_Fiorentino) festival in 1964.[1] She appeared at the [Teatro Comunale Bologna](/source/Teatro_Comunale_Bologna) and [La Fenice](/source/La_Fenice) in Venice in 1965, at the [Staatsoper Dresden](/source/Staatsoper_Dresden) and the [Bavarian State Opera](/source/Bavarian_State_Opera) in Munich in 1967, at the [Grand Théâtre de Genève](/source/Grand_Th%C3%A9%C3%A2tre_de_Gen%C3%A8ve) in 1968, at the [Budapest Opera](/source/Budapest_Opera) and the [Sofia Opera](/source/National_Opera_and_Ballet_of_Bulgaria) in 1970, and at the [Grand Theatre](/source/Grand_Theatre,_Warsaw) in Warsaw 1974.[1] Her repertoire also included the title role of Verdi's *[Aida](/source/Aida)*, Lady Macbeth in his *[Macbeth](/source/Macbeth_(Verdi))*, Abigail in his *[Nabucco](/source/Nabucco)*, the Marschallin in *[Der Rosenkavalier](/source/Der_Rosenkavalier)* by Richard Strauss, the title role of Puccini's *[Turandot](/source/Turandot)*, and Isolde in Wagner's *[Tristan und Isolde](/source/Tristan_und_Isolde)*.[1] She died in [Hollabrunn](/source/Hollabrunn).[1] A street in Wiesbaden is named after her.[4] ## References 1.
