**Liam Seán MacDaid** (19 July 1945 – 15 August 2023) was an Irish [Roman Catholic](/source/Catholic_Church) [prelate](/source/Prelate) who served as [Bishop of Clogher](/source/Bishop_of_Clogher) between 2010 and 2016.

## Early life and education

Liam Seán MacDaid was born in [Bundoran](/source/Bundoran), [County Donegal](/source/County_Donegal) on 19 July 1945. He attended primary school at St Louis Infant School and St Macartan's National School, and secondary school at [St Macartan's College](/source/St_Macartan's_College). MacDaid had a keen interest in [Gaelic games](/source/Gaelic_games), playing for [St Joseph's GFC](/source/St_Joseph's_GFC_(Donegal)) at club level and some [Donegal](/source/Donegal_GAA) county teams in the early 1970s.[1][2]

MacDaid began studying for the priesthood at [St Patrick's College, Maynooth](/source/St_Patrick's_College%2C_Maynooth) in 1962, graduating with honours in [Celtic studies](/source/Celtic_studies) in 1965 and [sacred theology](/source/Sacred_theology) in 1968.[1]

MacDaid was [ordained to the priesthood](/source/Holy_orders_in_the_Catholic_Church) for the [Diocese of Clogher](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Clogher) on 15 June 1969.[1][3]

## Presbyteral ministry

Following ordination, MacDaid completed a [higher diploma](/source/Higher_diploma) in [education](/source/Pedagogy) from [St Patrick's College, Maynooth](/source/St_Patrick's_College%2C_Maynooth), before returning to the [Diocese of Clogher](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Clogher) in 1970 for his first diocesan appointment, as a teacher at [St Macartan's College](/source/St_Macartan's_College), where he subsequently served as president between 1981 and 1989.[4]

MacDaid subsequently completed a [diploma](/source/Diploma) in [counselling](/source/Counseling_psychology) from [University College Dublin](/source/University_College_Dublin) in 1978, and served as a counselling tutor with the Catholic Marriage Advisory Council, before he was appointed chairman of the diocesan [council of priests](/source/Presbyteral_council) in 1988.[1]

MacDaid received his first pastoral appointment in 1989, when he was appointed [curate](/source/Curate) in [Aghavea](/source/Aghavea)/Aghintaine (centred on [Brookeborough](/source/Brookeborough) and [Fivemiletown](/source/Fivemiletown)). He was appointed diocesan secretary, diocesan communications officer and [administrator](/source/Administrator_(of_ecclesiastical_property)) in [Tyholland](/source/Tyholland) in 1993, and subsequently diocesan [chancellor](/source/Chancellor_(ecclesiastical)) the following year. MacDaid was also a founding member of the Association of Management of Catholic Secondary Schools.[1]

MacDaid was appointed [Chaplain of His Holiness](/source/Chaplain_of_His_Holiness) by [Pope John Paul II](/source/Pope_John_Paul_II) on 27 February 2002.[1]

## Episcopal ministry

MacDaid was appointed [Bishop-elect of Clogher](/source/Bishop_of_Clogher) by [Pope Benedict XVI](/source/Pope_Benedict_XVI) on 6 May 2010.[1] At the time of his appointment, he was the most recent bishop to have been chosen from among the clergy of his native diocese.[5]

MacDaid was consecrated by the [Archbishop of Armagh](/source/Archbishop_of_Armagh) and [Primate of All Ireland](/source/Primacy_of_Ireland), [Seán Brady](/source/Se%C3%A1n_Brady_(cardinal)), on 25 July at [St Macartan's Cathedral](/source/St_Macartan's_Cathedral%2C_Monaghan), [Monaghan](/source/Monaghan). In his first address as bishop, MacDaid referred to the recent [clerical sexual abuse cases](/source/Catholic_Church_sexual_abuse_cases) in the Church, saying that the church "has been brought to our knees but maybe that is no bad thing".[6][7]

During his episcopacy, he advocated for greater collaboration between priests and laity, establishing support groups including a pastoral support group and a commission on diocesan liturgy, and initiated a stronger diocesan [youth ministry](/source/Youth_ministry). MacDaid also continued the development and implementation of safeguarding policies and structures initiated by his predecessor, [Joseph Duffy](/source/Joseph_Duffy_(bishop)), which were reviewed and complimented by the National Board for the Safeguarding of Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland in 2011. He also chaired the Council for Marriage and the Family of the [Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference](/source/Irish_Catholic_Bishops'_Conference) from 2012 until 2016, and served as vice-chairperson of [Accord](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Accord_(agency)&action=edit&redlink=1).[8][2]

MacDaid joined a number of other bishops in releasing a statement on 8 June 2016, ahead of a [referendum in the United Kingdom](/source/2016_United_Kingdom_European_Union_membership_referendum) on [its membership of the European Union](/source/United_Kingdom_membership_of_the_European_Union), warning against [the impact](/source/Brexit_and_the_Irish_border) of a potential [Brexit](/source/Brexit) on the [peace process in Northern Ireland](/source/Northern_Ireland_peace_process).[9]

It was announced on 1 October 2016 that McDaid had tendered his resignation on medical grounds to [Pope Francis](/source/Pope_Francis) some months previously, and that it had been with immediate effect.[10][11][12][13]

Liam MacDaid died on 15 August 2023, while he was on holiday in France. He was 78.[14]
