# Lexa Gates

**Ivanna Alexandra Martinez** (born April 8, 2001), known as **Lexa Gates**, is an American musician and rapper.

## Early life

At a young age, Gates lived with her father and sister in [Puerto Rico](/source/Puerto_Rico).[1] Her mother has previously written songs and sung in cafés as a hobby.[1][2] Her mother saved up money from packing cigarettes in Puerto Rico to move back to the [Queens](/source/Queens) borough of New York City, where Gates grew up.[1][3] She began playing piano after watching her mother do so.[1] She participated in singing lessons as a child.[3] She [dropped out](/source/Dropping_out) of the [New York City public school system](/source/New_York_City_Department_of_Education) at fifteen years old, when she was in the tenth grade,[4] and later began making music at the age of seventeen.[1][3][5]

## Musical career

Gates' debut album, *Order of Events*, was released in 2020.[1] Her second album, *Universe Wrapped in Flesh*, was released in 2022.[1] In October 2024, she released her album *Elite Vessel*.[1] That same month, she locked herself in a glass box in Manhattan's [Union Square](/source/Union_Square,_Manhattan) for ten hours to promote the album.[1][4][5][6] She released *I Am* on January 16, 2026.[7] In promotion for the album, she performed a immersive art installation at the [Jeffrey Deitch Gallery](/source/Jeffrey_Deitch) in New York City in which she walked on a human-sized [hamster wheel](/source/Hamster_wheel) for 10 hours.[8][9]

## Personal life

Gates has been [sober](/source/Sobriety) from alcohol since her twenty-first birthday.[1]
