**Alexander Carey Shrapnel** (born 6 October 1979) is an English actor.

## Early life

Shrapnel was born on 6 October 1979 in [London](/source/London), the second of three boys for actor [John Shrapnel](/source/John_Shrapnel) and Francesca Ann (née Bartley).[1] He is the brother of director/writer Tom Shrapnel and writer Joe Shrapnel and, through his mother, the grandson of Academy Award-nominated actress [Deborah Kerr](/source/Deborah_Kerr).[1] He graduated from the [Guildhall School of Music & Drama](/source/Guildhall_School_of_Music_%26_Drama).

## Career

He has appeared in many film and television roles such as *[K-19: The Widowmaker](/source/K-19:_The_Widowmaker)*, *[Nine Lives](/source/Nine_Lives_(2002_film))*, *[Thunderbirds](/source/Thunderbirds_(2004_film))*, *[Breakfast on Pluto](/source/Breakfast_on_Pluto)*, *[Flyboys](/source/Flyboys_(film))*, *[Ministry of Mayhem](/source/Ministry_of_Mayhem)* and *[The Last Detective](/source/The_Last_Detective)*. He also appeared in the [Doctor Who](/source/Doctor_Who) [audio play](/source/Radio_drama), *Shadow of the Past*.

Shrapnel's Hotspur in [Henry IV](/source/Henry_IV,_Part_1) in the [Royal Shakespeare Company](/source/Royal_Shakespeare_Company)'s critically acclaimed 2008 production was described as 'thrillingly charismatic'.[2] He also has appeared on stage in 2011 in [Terence Rattigan](/source/Terence_Rattigan)'s *[The Deep Blue Sea](/source/The_Deep_Blue_Sea_(play))* performed at the [West Yorkshire Playhouse](/source/West_Yorkshire_Playhouse). He is quoted as saying "Before going in you set a high bar for yourself, but you've just got to get into rehearsals, do the work and hope it comes together".[3]
