**Lewis Robert Wolberg** (July 4, 1905 – February 3, 1988) was an American [psychoanalyst](/source/Psychoanalyst). He advocated the use of [hypnoanalysis](/source/Hypnoanalysis) in [psychiatric](/source/Psychiatry) treatment. He wrote or edited 20 books, and in 1945 founded the [Postgraduate Center for Mental Health](/source/Postgraduate_Center_for_Mental_Health) in [New York City](/source/New_York_City).[1]

In 1927, Wolberg graduated from the [University of Rochester](/source/University_of_Rochester) and obtained his [M.D.](/source/M.D.) from [Tufts University School of Medicine](/source/Tufts_University_School_of_Medicine) in 1930. From 1967 to 1986, he was professor of psychiatry at the [New York University School of Medicine](/source/New_York_University_School_of_Medicine).[2]

Wolberg was also interested in [dieting](/source/Dieting) and [nutrition](/source/Nutrition). He authored *The Psychology of Eating* in 1936.[3] He was highly critical of [fad diets](/source/Fad_diet). To treat obesity, he recommended a low-calorie diet.[4]
