The Lewis Range is within [Waterton Lakes National Park](/source/Waterton_Lakes_National_Park) in Canada, and in [Glacier National Park](/source/Glacier_National_Park_(U.S.)) in Montana. The [Continental Divide](/source/Continental_Divide_of_the_Americas) spans much of the uppermost sections of the range. ==Geology==
Formed by the [Lewis Overthrust](/source/Lewis_Overthrust) beginning 170 million years ago, an enormous slab of [Precambrian](/source/Precambrian) rocks {{convert|3|mi|km}} thick, {{convert|50|mi|km}} wide and {{convert|160|mi|km}} long faulted and slid over newer rocks of the [Cretaceous](/source/Cretaceous) period. In this relatively rare occurrence, older rocks are now positioned above newer ones.{{citation needed|date=January 2016}}
