# Lewis Newnham

**Lewis Cyril Ashby Newnham** (13 September 1881 – 20 November 1932) was a South African [cricketer](/source/Cricket). He played in two [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) matches in 1903/04 and 1920/21.[1][2]

Newnham was a left-handed batsman and left-arm bowler.[1] In his second first-class match, 17 years after his first, he took 3 for 14 off 9 overs in the second innings to help [Transvaal](/source/Gauteng_cricket_team) to an innings victory over [Orange Free State](/source/Free_State_cricket_team) in the 1920–21 [Currie Cup](/source/Currie_Cup_(cricket)).[3] At the age of 43 he scored 58, the highest score on either side in the two-day match, for a [Pretoria](/source/Northerns_cricket_team) side against [S. B. Joel's XI](/source/S._B._Joel's_XI_cricket_team_in_South_Africa_in_1924%E2%80%9325), a team consisting largely of English [Test cricketers](/source/Test_cricket), in November 1924.[4][5][6]

Newnham was educated at [Cranleigh School](/source/Cranleigh_School) in England.[1] He served as an officer in the [Cape Corps](/source/Cape_Corps) in [World War I](/source/World_War_I).[7] He married Constance Vera Lofthouse in [Pretoria](/source/Pretoria) in March 1910; they had several children.[8]
