He was a younger brother of [Thomas Cubitt](/source/Thomas_Cubitt),<ref>{{ODNBweb|id=6859|title=Cubitt, Thomas|first=Hermione|last=Hobhouse}}</ref> the leading [master builder](/source/Master_craftsman) in [London](/source/London) in the second quarter of the 19th century, and he designed many of the [housing development](/source/housing_development)s constructed by his sibling. He also was a younger brother of [William Cubitt](/source/William_Cubitt_(politician)), the [Lord Mayor of London](/source/Lord_Mayor_of_London).

He built many bridges in his career, most of them being in South America, Australia and India. ==Legacy==

As part of the ongoing redevelopment of the adjoining railway lands, now known as [King's Cross Central](/source/King's_Cross_Central), a [granary](/source/granary) designed by Cubitt has been refurbished as the main campus facility for [Central Saint Martins](/source/Central_Saint_Martins), a constituent college of the [University of the Arts London](/source/University_of_the_Arts_London). The structural rivet Cubitt used in his development of the granary inspired the hinges used by eyewear brand [Cubitts](/source/Cubitts), who are named after the Cubitt brothers.

Lewis Cubbitt Square and Lewis Cubitt Park, in the [London Borough of Camden](/source/London_Borough_of_Camden) commemorate Cubitt's work in the area.
