# Lev Shankovsky

**Lev Shankovsky** (Ukrainian: Шанко́вський Лев Петро́вич, Шанкі́вський), (pseudonym - *"Dzvin"*, *"Oleh Martovych"*) was a Ukrainian military historian and former [Ukrainian Insurgent Army](/source/Ukrainian_Insurgent_Army) (UPA) soldier, a leading member of the [Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists](/source/Organization_of_Ukrainian_Nationalists). He was a full member of the [Shevchenko Scientific Society](/source/Shevchenko_Scientific_Society).

Shankovsky was born in 1903 in the village of [Duliby, Stryi Raion](/source/Duliby,_Stryi_Raion). He received military education in Ukrainian and Polish schools and served in the armies of the [UPR](/source/Ukrainian_People's_Republic) and the [UGA](/source/Ukrainian_Galician_Army). Participants of the [First Winter Campaign](/source/First_Winter_Campaign) (1920). During the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War), he participated in the Resistance in the [Ukrainian Insurgent Army](/source/Ukrainian_Insurgent_Army).[citation needed]

In January 1944, Shankovsky, as a leader of the [UPA](/source/Ukrainian_Insurgent_Army) forces, headed the initiating commission that established contacts with representatives of former Ukrainian political parties as well as nonpartisan activists.

Shankovsky died on 25 April 1995, aged 91,[1] in [Philadelphia, Pennsylvania](/source/Philadelphia,_Pennsylvania), and was interred in the Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery in [South Bound Brook, New Jersey](/source/South_Bound_Brook,_New_Jersey).
