Grainge was born in [Keighley](/source/Keighley), [West Riding of Yorkshire](/source/West_Riding_of_Yorkshire), England, he attended [Woodhouse Grove School](/source/Woodhouse_Grove_School), in [Apperley Bridge](/source/Apperley_Bridge), where he was [Head Prefect](/source/Head_Girl_and_Head_Boy) and [Victor Ludorum](/source/Victor_Ludorum) twice, and [captain](/source/Captain_(sports)) of the [cricket](/source/cricket), [rugby union](/source/rugby_union) and [lacrosse](/source/lacrosse) teams, he died aged 72 in [Keswick](/source/Keswick%2C_Cumbria), [Cumbria](/source/Cumbria), England.
