== In animals ==
In the animal world, leopard pattern refers to the black and gold spotted coat of the [leopard](/source/leopard),<ref name="leopardspots"/> but is used to describe many color combinations that result in spots scattered across the skin or hair coat of other animals.
Examples of animals with coloring patterns termed ''leopard'' include many great cats in the genus ''[Panthera](/source/Panthera)'', the [leopard frog](/source/leopard_frog), the "leopard" spotting pattern in the [Appaloosa](/source/Appaloosa) and [Knabstrupper](/source/Knabstrupper) breeds of [horse](/source/horse)s, the [leopard seal](/source/leopard_seal), insects such as the [giant leopard moth](/source/giant_leopard_moth), and fish species such as the [leopard darter](/source/leopard_darter), [leopard shark](/source/leopard_shark), and the [leopard eel](/source/leopard_eel).<ref name="eel"/>  Examples of plants that use the term include the [leopard lily](/source/Dieffenbachia), and the [leopard flower](/source/Belamcanda_chinensis).<ref name="flower"/> Other animals with leopard patterns include the [leopard cat](/source/leopard_cat), [snow leopard](/source/snow_leopard), [clouded leopard](/source/clouded_leopard), [leopard gecko](/source/leopard_gecko) and the [leopard tortoise](/source/leopard_tortoise) among some others.

The ''Lp'' ([leopard complex](/source/leopard_complex)) gene is responsible for the leopard color pattern in [horse](/source/horse)s,<ref name=spon82/><ref name=sponenbergbook/> which not only produces a spotted [coat color](/source/equine_coat_color) but also causes [mottling](/source/mottling) of the skin, a white [sclera](/source/sclera) around the eye, and striped [hooves](/source/horse_hoof).  Horses with the ''Lp'' gene may be spotted all over, or may have concentrations of spots in various patterns.

Some other animal breeds like dogs, such as [Dalmatian](/source/Dalmatian_(dog))s, [Catahoula Leopard Dog](/source/Catahoula_Leopard_Dog)s and [American Leopard Hound](/source/American_Leopard_Hound)s also have similar leopard color patterns.
