# Leonard Cotes

**Leonard Cotes** or **Coates** ([fl.](/source/Floruit) 1669–1701[1]) was an English painter and [beadle](/source/Beadle) of the [Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers](/source/Worshipful_Company_of_Painter-Stainers). His apprentices included [Thomas Highmore](/source/Thomas_Highmore), later [Serjeant Painter](/source/Serjeant_Painter) to [William III of England](/source/William_III_of_England).[2] Cotes' will is held in the UK's [National Archives](/source/The_National_Archives_(United_Kingdom)) and was proven on 3 May 1701.[3]
