'''Leon Kaufmann''', in French, '''Léon Kamir Kaufmann''', also known as '''Kamir''' or '''Kamir-Kaufman''' (8 June 1872 in [Pawłowo](/source/Paw%C5%82owo%2C_Sierpc_County) – 27 May 1933 in [Louveciennes](/source/Louveciennes)) was a Polish painter and [pastel](/source/pastel) artist who worked in France after 1902.<ref name=slownik>Biography by H. Bartnicka-Górska, from: ''Słownik artystów polskich i obcych w Polsce działających. Malarze, rzeźbiarze, graficy.'' (6 vols), J. Maurin Białostocka, J. Derwojeda (eds.), Zakład Narodowy im. Ossolińskich, 2003 {{ISBN|978-83-89101-09-9}}</ref>

== Biography ==
His first art lessons were in 1888, at the {{ill|School of Fine Arts, Warsaw|pl|Szkoła Sztuk Pięknych w Warszawie|lt=School of Fine Arts}} in Warsaw with [Wojciech Gerson](/source/Wojciech_Gerson). In 1895, he moved to Munich, where he studied at the [Academy of Fine Arts](/source/Academy_of_Fine_Arts_Munich) with [Simon Hollósy](/source/Simon_Holl%C3%B3sy) until 1897. The following year, he entered the [Académie Julian](/source/Acad%C3%A9mie_Julian) in Paris. On that occasion, his primary instructor was [Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant](/source/Jean-Joseph_Benjamin-Constant).<ref name = katalog>Ewa Millicer, ''Mistrzowie pastelu. Od Marteau do Witkacego'', Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie, 2015 {{ISBN|978-83-7100-917-4}}</ref> W 1900 powrócił do Warszawy.

From 1901 to 1902, he and the literary critic {{ill|Cezary Jellenta|pl}} held an artistic cabaret at his studio, which was regularly attended by the author, [Zofia Nałkowska](/source/Zofia_Na%C5%82kowska) and Tadeusz Ulanowski (1872-1942), a noted actor, among others. In 1902, he left for Paris and settled there permanently, but never broke off contact with his homeland, paying frequent visits to Warsaw and [Vilnius](/source/Vilnius), where he was the guest of the philanthropist, {{ill|Eugenia Kierbedź|pl}}. In 1914, he married Odette Dessauces, from a wealthy French family. They settled on an estate in Louveciennes in 1922, but he maintained his studio in Paris.<ref name=slownik/>

He continued to exhibit in Poland; notably with the {{ill|Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts, Warsaw|pl|Towarzystwo Zachęty Sztuk Pięknych|lt=Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts}} and in the salon of {{ill|Aleksander Krywult|pl}}. He also worked with the "Protection Society for Children of the Jewish Religion". In Paris, he favored the [Salon d'Automne](/source/Salon_d'Automne), the salon of the [Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts](/source/Soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9_Nationale_des_Beaux-Arts) (of which he became a member in 1911) and the [Salon des Tuileries](/source/Salon_des_Tuileries).<ref name=slownik/> He also held personal exhibitions and a few in other European cities, such as London, Venice and Vienna.<ref name = katalog/>

He painted in a variety of genres; including portraits, landscapes and [interior scenes](/source/Interior_portrait). Although he lived in France, he apparently never became involved in the various artistic schools that developed there.<ref name="katalog" /> His pastel portraits, however, were inspired by [Luminist](/source/Luminism_(Impressionism)) techniques and were designed to give an impression of vagueness. Among those he portrayed were the French composers and musicians [Alfred Cortot](/source/Alfred_Cortot), [Paul Dukas](/source/Paul_Dukas), [Reynaldo Hahn](/source/Reynaldo_Hahn) and [Ferruccio Busoni](/source/Ferruccio_Busoni). His portraits of Polish notables included [Wanda Landowska](/source/Wanda_Landowska), [Ignacy Jan Paderewski](/source/Ignacy_Jan_Paderewski), [Józef Hofmann](/source/J%C3%B3zef_Hofmann), [Stanisław Przybyszewski](/source/Stanis%C5%82aw_Przybyszewski) and [Jan Rosen](/source/Jan_Rosen),
