'''''Lentinula''''' is a small [genus](/source/genus) of wood-inhabiting [agarics](/source/agarics). The [neotropical](/source/neotropical) species ''Lentinula boryana'' (= ''L. cubensis'') is the [type species](/source/type_species). However, the best-known species is ''L. edodes'', the [shiitake](/source/shiitake). The genus was erected by [Franklin Sumner Earle](/source/Franklin_Sumner_Earle) in 1909,<ref name=Earle1909/> and as of 2023 contains ten species,<ref name=CoL2023/> principally found in [tropical](/source/tropical) regions.<ref name=Kirk2008/>
