**Legnago** (Italian pronunciation: [\[leɲˈɲaːɡo\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Italian); [Venetian](/source/Venetian_language): *Lenjago*) is a town and *[comune](/source/Comune)* in the [Province of Verona](/source/Province_of_Verona), [Veneto](/source/Veneto), northern [Italy](/source/Italy), with population (2012) of 25,439.[3] It is located on the [Adige](/source/Adige) river, about 43 kilometres (27 mi) from [Verona](/source/Verona). Its fertile land produces crops of rice, other cereals, sugar, and tobacco.

## History

There are traces of human presence in the area date back to the [Bronze Age](/source/Bronze_Age).

Legnago had an important military role since the early Middle Ages. In the 19th century it was one of the [Quadrilatero](/source/Quadrilatero) fortresses, the main strongpoint of the Austrian [Lombardy-Venetia](/source/Lombardy-Venetia) puppet state during the [Italian Wars of Independence](/source/Italian_unification).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] The present fortifications were planned and made in 1815, the older defences having been destroyed by [Napoleon I](/source/Napoleon_I) in 1801.[4]

## Geography

Located in the southwestern corner of its province, near the borders with the ones of [Rovigo](/source/Province_of_Rovigo), [Padua](/source/Province_of_Padua) and [Vicenza](/source/Province_of_Vicenza), Legnago borders with the municipalities of [Angiari](/source/Angiari), [Bergantino](/source/Bergantino) (RO), [Bonavigo](/source/Bonavigo), [Boschi Sant'Anna](/source/Boschi_Sant'Anna), [Castelnovo Bariano](/source/Castelnovo_Bariano) (RO), [Cerea](/source/Cerea), [Minerbe](/source/Minerbe), [Terrazzo](/source/Terrazzo%2C_Veneto) and [Villa Bartolomea](/source/Villa_Bartolomea). It counts the hamlets (*[frazioni](/source/Frazione)*) of Canove, Casette, Porto, San Pietro, San Vito, Terranegra, Torretta, Vangadizza and Vigo.[1]

## Culture

In honour of Legnago's most famous native, the composer [Antonio Salieri](/source/Antonio_Salieri), there is a Salieri Opera Festival every autumn sponsored by the Fondazione Culturale Antonio Salieri and dedicated to rediscovering his work and those of his contemporaries. A theatre in Legnago has also been renamed in his honour.[5]
