# Lee Swinton

**Lee Vertis Swinton** (August 9, 1922 – July 9, 1994)[1] was an American politician who became the first [African-American](/source/African-American) to serve in the [Missouri Senate](/source/Missouri_Senate) from the Kansas City area. He was a [Democrat](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)).[2] He was a former [Kansas City](/source/Kansas_City,_Missouri) [NAACP](/source/NAACP) president.[3]
