**Lee Sandales** (born December 1971)[1] is an English set decorator. He is mostly known for his work on the films *[War Horse](/source/War_Horse_(film))* (2011), *[Star Wars: The Force Awakens](/source/Star_Wars%3A_The_Force_Awakens)* (2015), *[Rogue One](/source/Rogue_One)* (2016), *[1917](/source/1917_(2019_film))* (2019), and *[Wicked](/source/Wicked_(2024_film))* (2024). Throughout his career, he has been nominated for three [Academy Awards](/source/Academy_Awards), winning for *Wicked* and has been nominated for four [BAFTA Awards](/source/British_Academy_Film_Awards), winning two of them – in [2020](/source/73rd_British_Academy_Film_Awards) for *1917*, and in [2025](/source/78th_British_Academy_Film_Awards) for *Wicked*.

## Early life

Sandales was born in December 1971 in [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool) and grew up in [Gateacre](/source/Gateacre) with his parents Audrey and Charlie. He attended the local [comprehensive school](/source/Comprehensive_school_(England_and_Wales)), before attending [University of Roehampton](/source/University_of_Roehampton) and getting his first job.[2] He now lives in [London](/source/London) with his husband Mark.[3][4]
