# LeConte Bay

**LeConte Bay** is an 810-foot-deep (247 m), six-mile-long (10 km) [bay](/source/Bay) in the [southeastern region](/source/Alaska_Panhandle) of the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Alaska](/source/Alaska), located east of [Frederick Sound](/source/Frederick_Sound).

The bay was named in 1887 for [Joseph LeConte](/source/Joseph_LeConte), then professor of [geology](/source/Geology) at the [University of California](/source/University_of_California).[1] According to [John Muir](/source/John_Muir), the local [Tlingit](/source/Tlingit_people) name for the bay is **Hutli**, the mythical [thunderbird](/source/Thunderbird_(mythology)).

LeConte Bay is a very steep-sided [fjord](/source/Fjord) that is home to a [seal](/source/Pinniped) [rookery](/source/Rookery) and the terminus of [LeConte Glacier](/source/LeConte_Glacier).
