# Lawrence School, Lovedale

**The Lawrence School, Lovedale,** is a fee-charging [co-educational](/source/Mixed-sex_education) [public boarding school](/source/Public_school_(United_Kingdom)) located at [Lovedale](/source/Lovedale_(India)), a [hill station](/source/Hill_station) on the [Nilgiri Mountains](/source/Nilgiri_Mountains) in the [southern Indian](/source/South_India) state of [Tamil Nadu](/source/Tamil_Nadu).[1]

## History

Formerly known as Lawrence Memorial [Royal](/source/Royal_charter) [Military School](/source/Military_high_school), the namesake of its founder, [Brigadier-General](/source/Brigadier-General) [Sir](/source/Sir) [Henry Montgomery Lawrence](/source/Henry_Montgomery_Lawrence) [KCB](/source/Order_of_the_Bath)),[2] who had mooted the idea of establishing a chain of [British Raj](/source/British_Raj) [military-style boarding schools](/source/Military_high_school) at the [hill stations](/source/Hill_station) of India to educate the children of the deceased and serving members of the [British Indian Army](/source/British_Indian_Army).[3] Although Lawrence was killed at [The Residency, Lucknow](/source/The_Residency,_Lucknow), during the [Indian Rebellion of 1857](/source/Indian_Rebellion_of_1857), his dream materialised and four such schools, known then as the [Lawrence Military Asylums](/source/Lawrence_Military_Asylums), were established: at [Sanawar](/source/Sanawar) in 1847 and [Mount Abu](/source/Mount_Abu) in 1856, both during his lifetime, and later at [Lovedale](/source/Lovedale,_India) in 1858 and at [Ghora Gali](/source/Ghora_Gali) in 1860.

## Campus

The Lawrence School, Lovedale has its campus on 700 acres leased from the [Ministry of Defence](/source/Ministry_of_Defence_(India))[4] in [Lovedale](/source/Lovedale,_India), which is 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from [Ootacamund](/source/Ootacamund). Located at a height of 7,200 feet above mean sea level, it is slightly lower than the [Dodabetta](/source/Doddabetta) peak (altitude: 8650 feet), which is the highest peak of the [Nilgiri](/source/Nilgiris_(mountains)) mountain range.

Many notable personalities, including Prime Ministers [Jawaharlal Nehru](/source/Jawaharlal_Nehru) and [Indira Gandhi](/source/Indira_Gandhi), Presidents [Zail Singh](/source/Zail_Singh), [Pranab Mukherjee](/source/Pranab_Mukherjee) and [A. P. J. Abdul Kalam](/source/A._P._J._Abdul_Kalam), and others such as [Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw](/source/Sam_Manekshaw) and [Vice President Venkaiah Naidu](/source/Venkaiah_Naidu),[5] have visited this campus to grace the school's Founder's Day and other special occasions.[6][7]

## Architecture

On 31 May 1988, a commemorative postage stamp was issued by [India Post](/source/India_Post) to mark 130 years of the school's existence with an image displaying the towering campanile section of Italian Gothic styled architecture of the main building, which houses the *Senior School* and administrative offices.[8][9]

## Students

The student body is from all over India and overseas, and is led by [prefects](/source/Prefect#Academic) headed by a [head girl and head boy](/source/Head_girl_and_head_boy).[10] The school also has a 40 percent reservation of seats and a 20 percent fee subsidy for children of [Indian Defence](/source/Ministry_of_Defence_(India)) personnel.
