# Lawrence Moss

**Lawrence Kenneth Moss** (November 18, 1927 – June 24, 2022) was an [American](/source/Americans) composer of [contemporary classical music](/source/Contemporary_classical_music). He was born in [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles).

He held a B.A. degree from the [University of California, Los Angeles](/source/University_of_California,_Los_Angeles), an M.A. from the [Eastman School of Music](/source/Eastman_School_of_Music), and a Ph.D. in music composition from the [University of Southern California](/source/University_of_Southern_California), where his instructors included [Leon Kirchner](/source/Leon_Kirchner) and [Ingolf Dahl](/source/Ingolf_Dahl).

He taught at [Mills College](/source/Mills_College), [Yale University](/source/Yale_University) (1960-1968), and the [University of Maryland, College Park](/source/University_of_Maryland,_College_Park) (1969-2014). His notable students include [Jeffrey Mumford](/source/Jeffrey_Mumford), [Liviu Marinescu](/source/Liviu_Marinescu), [Julia Stilman-Lasansky](/source/Julia_Stilman-Lasansky), and [Susan Cohn Lackman](/source/Susan_Cohn_Lackman).

He received two [Guggenheim Fellowships](/source/Guggenheim_Fellowship) (1959 and 1968), a Fulbright Scholarship, and four grants from the [National Endowment for the Arts](/source/National_Endowment_for_the_Arts).

Moss composed operatic, instrumental, and electronic music. His music is published by [Theodore Presser](/source/Theodore_Presser), Association for the Promotion of New Music (A.P.N.M.), McGinnis & Marx, Alfred Publishing Co., Roncorp Inc., Northeastern Music Programs, and Seesaw Music Corp.
