# Lawrence Carter (historian)

**Lawrence Edward Carter, Sr.** is an American historian, professor, author, and civil rights expert. He is Professor of Religion, College Archivist and Curator at [Morehouse College](/source/Morehouse_College) as well as the Dean of the [Martin Luther King Jr.](/source/Martin_Luther_King_Jr.) [International Chapel at Morehouse](/source/Martin_Luther_King_Jr._International_Chapel). Carter is also the founder of the Martin Luther King Jr. Chapel Assistants Pre-seminarians Program, and director of the Martin Luther King Jr. College of Pastoral Leadership.[1]

## Early life and education

Carter was born in [Dawson, Georgia](/source/Dawson,_Georgia) to John and Bernice Carter.[2] He grew up in [Columbus, Ohio](/source/Columbus,_Ohio) and graduated from [West High School](/source/West_High_School_(Columbus,_Ohio)).[3] He received his B.A. in Social Science and Psychology from [Virginia University of Lynchburg](/source/Virginia_University_of_Lynchburg), and subsequently a [M. Div](/source/Master_of_Divinity)., [S.T.M.](/source/Master_of_Sacred_Theology), and Ph.D. degrees from [Boston University](/source/Boston_University).[2][4]

## Career

After graduating from Boston University, Carter served as Associate Dean of Daniel L. Marsh Chapel at Boston University. Carter later taught at [Harvard University Divinity School](/source/Harvard_Divinity_School) and served as coordinator of African American studies at [Simmons College](/source/Simmons_College).[4]

At Morehouse College, Carter founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Chapel Assistants Pre-seminarians Program. He commissioned the [Gandhi](/source/Mahatma_Gandhi), King, [Ikeda](/source/Daisaku_Ikeda) Institute for Ethics and Reconciliation in 1999, and created the Gandhi-King-Ikeda Community Builder’s Prize of the Morehouse Chapel in 2001.[4] He also founded Morehouse College's International Hall of Honor and solicited a gift from the National Baptist Convention of $100,000 to erect the only statue in the state of Georgia of Martin Luther King Jr.[2] He is currently Dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapter at Morehouse.[2]

In 2021 Dr. Carter received a Boston University 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award.[5]

## Personal life

Carter is married to [Marva Griffin Carter](/source/Marva_Griffin_Carter), Associate Professor of Music History, Popular Music, and World Music at [Georgia State University](/source/Georgia_State_University).[2][6][7] They have one son, Lawrence Edward Carter Jr.[2][3]

## Awards and honors

Carter has received four [honorary degrees](/source/Honorary_degree) from the following three schools: [Lincoln University](/source/Lincoln_University_(Pennsylvania)), [Al al-Bayt University](/source/Al_al-Bayt_University), and [Soka University of Japan](/source/S%C5%8Dka_University). - National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow (x2)
- Fulbright-Hayes Scholar
