==Early life==
Atkinson was born at [Chorlton upon Medlock](/source/Chorlton_upon_Medlock), near [Manchester](/source/Manchester), on 17 January 1873.<ref name=Tate>''Wyndham Lewis and Vorticism''. [Tate Gallery](/source/Tate_Gallery), London, 1956, p. 27.</ref> He began by moving to Paris and studying musical composition, but moved back to London and began to paint, apparently painting mainly landscapes in a style influenced by [Matisse](/source/Matisse) and the [Fauves](/source/Fauvism) (almost all of these works are lost).

==Vorticism==
His style changed radically when he was introduced to the work of [Wyndham Lewis](/source/Wyndham_Lewis) and the [vorticists](/source/vorticists). He also wrote poetry, in a [Modernist](/source/Modernist_poetry) style.

==Death==
Atkinson died in Paris on 21 September 1931.<ref name=Tate/>
