**Laura Claycomb** (born August 23, 1968) is an American lyric [coloratura soprano](/source/Coloratura_soprano) singer.

## Background

Claycomb was born in [Corpus Christi, Texas](/source/Corpus_Christi,_Texas), but grew up in [Dallas](/source/Dallas), where she excelled in church and school choir, winning numerous youth competitions, such as the [National Association of Teachers of Singing](/source/National_Association_of_Teachers_of_Singing),[1] U.I.L., and Texas All-State Choir.[2] A graduate of [Highland Park High School](/source/Highland_Park_High_School_(University_Park,_Texas)),[3] Claycomb won a full scholarship to [Southern Methodist University](/source/Southern_Methodist_University),[4] where she studied voice with Barbara Hill Moore, and completed two bachelor's degrees in vocal performance and foreign languages.[5] She studied with the late Norma Newton from 1994 until Newton's death in 2008.

She won the Silver Medal at the [International Tchaikovsky Competition](/source/International_Tchaikovsky_Competition) in Moscow in 1994,[6] the Operetta Prize at the [International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition](/source/International_Hans_Gabor_Belvedere_Singing_Competition) in Vienna in 1992,[7] and First Prize in the National Opera Association Competition in 1992.[8]

## Early career

She gained international attention for the first time in 1994 after stepping in at the last minute to perform Giulietta in *[I Capuleti e i Montecchi](/source/I_Capuleti_e_i_Montecchi)* with [Geneva Opera](/source/Geneva_Opera). This role was also the vehicle of her debut at the [Opéra Bastille](/source/Op%C3%A9ra_Bastille) in Paris, with the [Munich Radio Orchestra](/source/Munich_Radio_Orchestra), [Los Angeles Opera](/source/Los_Angeles_Opera) and [Pittsburgh Opera](/source/Pittsburgh_Opera).[9]

She got her start at [San Francisco Opera](/source/San_Francisco_Opera) where she held an [Adler Fellowship](/source/Adler_Fellowship), singing roles such as Xenia in *[Boris Godunov](/source/Boris_Godunov_(opera))*, Papagena in *[Die Zauberflöte](/source/The_Magic_Flute)*, Duchesse Medina-Sidonia in Milhaud's *Christoph Colombe*, Marie in *[La fille du régiment](/source/La_fille_du_r%C3%A9giment)* and Fiakermilli in *[Arabella](/source/Arabella)*. Her role-debut of Zerbinetta in *[Ariadne auf Naxos](/source/Ariadne_auf_Naxos)* was the vehicle of her return to San Francisco Opera in 2002. After her debut at [La Scala](/source/La_Scala) in the title role of *Linda di Chamounix* with [Marcelo Álvarez](/source/Marcelo_%C3%81lvarez), she sang Marie in Rome and her first Sophie in [Keith Warner](/source/Keith_Warner)'s production of *[Der Rosenkavalier](/source/Der_Rosenkavalier)* at the [Spoleto Festival](/source/Spoleto_Festival) in Italy. In 2006, Claycomb originated the role of Queen Wealtheow in Elliot Goldenthal's opera *Grendel* in a Julie Taymor production with Los Angeles Opera and Lincoln Center Festival.[17] She added Anne Trulove in the *Rake's Progress* to her stage roles in 2007 with a new [Robert Lepage](/source/Robert_Lepage) production she originated at Brussels' La Monnaie and reprised at the Opéra de Lyon, reprising the role at the [Paris Opera](/source/Paris_Opera) in 2008 in a new [Olivier Py](/source/Olivier_Py) production.[18] In 2015, Claycomb created the role of Hester Prynne in the world premiere of [Lori Laitman](/source/Lori_Laitman)'s *[The Scarlet Letter](/source/The_Scarlet_Letter_(Laitman_opera))* at [Opera Colorado](/source/Opera_Colorado) as well as singing [Leonard Bernstein](/source/Leonard_Bernstein)'s [Kaddish](/source/Kaddish) ([Symphony No. 3](/source/Symphony_No._3_(Bernstein))) for the first time with the [RAI National Symphony Orchestra](/source/RAI_National_Symphony_Orchestra) in Turin.[19]

In London's [Royal Albert Hall](/source/Royal_Albert_Hall), she sang a Mozart program including *[Der Schauspieldirektor](/source/Der_Schauspieldirektor)* with [Iván Fischer](/source/Iv%C3%A1n_Fischer) and the [Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment](/source/Orchestra_of_the_Age_of_Enlightenment), which was also broadcast on [BBC Radio](/source/BBC_Radio). On another all-Mozart program in Switzerland, Claycomb was the feature, singing a program of 6 concert arias with the [Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne](/source/Orchestre_de_Chambre_de_Lausanne) and conductor Jonathan Darlington. She appeared as Madame Silberklang in *[Der Schauspieldirektor](/source/Der_Schauspieldirektor)* with the Munich Radio Orchestra and Sebastian Weigle, and another Mozart concert with Ulf Schirmer. Claycomb also performed [Beethoven](/source/Ludwig_van_Beethoven)'s rarely heard oratorio *Christus am Ölberg* with the Flemish Opera Orchestra and Ivan Törz, as well as with Pinchas Steinberg and the Orchestra of Santa Cecilia in Rome.[22]

She sang her first [Brahms](/source/Johannes_Brahms) *[Ein deutsches Requiem](/source/Ein_deutsches_Requiem)* at the [Teatro Lirico di Cagliari](/source/Teatro_Lirico_di_Cagliari) with Gerard Korsten, a concert of bel canto excerpts with John Demain and [Opera Pacific](/source/Opera_Pacific) as well as at the Lanaudière Festival with [Yannick Nézet-Séguin](/source/Yannick_N%C3%A9zet-S%C3%A9guin), and was the feature of New Year's concerts with Vlaamse Opera, with George Pehlavanian conducting.[citation needed]

With an avid interest in recital repertoire, chamber music, and neglected composers, she combines this music into her recital schedule with pianists [Roger Vignoles](/source/Roger_Vignoles), Peter Grunberg, Keith Weber and Iain Burnside. In past years, Claycomb reprised [Messiaen](/source/Olivier_Messiaen)'s *Chants de terre et de ciel* with Grunberg on "Cal Performances" to rave reviews, as well performing three world-premieres at One World Theater in [Austin](/source/Austin,_Texas) on a chamber concert with [Nina Kotova](/source/Nina_Kotova), [José Feghali](/source/Jos%C3%A9_Feghali), and Ron Neal. Her recitals have taken her from San Francisco to Chicago, San Antonio, San Marcos, Austin, Houston, Georgetown (TX), Brussels, Bruges (Concertgebouw), Santiago de Compostela (Spain), the Tuscan Sun Festival in [Cortona](/source/Cortona), Italy and a BBC Voices recital on English radio.[23]

## Awards

Claycomb was the recipient of the 2011 [Maria Callas](/source/Maria_Callas) Debut Artist Award for her performances as Gilda in Dallas Opera's production of *Rigoletto,*[24] the 2000 Pegasus Prize at the Spoleto Festival in Italy, and 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award for Highland Park High School,[25] among many prizes.
