# Lates longispinis

***Lates longispinis***, also known as the **Rudolf lates** or **Turkana perch**, is a species of [latid](/source/Latidae) fish that is [endemic](/source/Endemism) to [Lake Turkana](/source/Lake_Turkana) (formerly known as Lake Rudolf) in [Kenya](/source/Kenya) and [Ethiopia](/source/Ethiopia).[1] It grows to 57 centimetres (22 in) in length.[1] *Lates longispinis* is important to [commercial fisheries](/source/Commercial_fisheries) and is also known as a [gamefish](/source/Gamefish). It is not known to exist in the [aquarium fish](/source/Aquarium_fish) trade.

Little is known about its status, and consequently the [IUCN](/source/IUCN) classifies it as [Data Deficient](/source/Data_Deficient), but according to Kenya's fisheries department the numbers are rising.[2]

## Behavior

### Feeding

The Rudolf lates lives in the deeper waters of the lake, eating [prawns](/source/Prawn) off the bottom of the [lakes](/source/Lake) and feeding on [schooling](/source/Shoaling_and_schooling) [characins](/source/Characin) in the mid-water column.[2]

### Breeding

Not much is known about the [breeding](/source/Reproduction) habits of *L. longispinis*. It spawns in the open water in the middle of the lake, and [parental care](/source/Parental_care) is highly unlikely. The [eggs](/source/Egg_(biology)) and [fry](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/fry) are believed to be [pelagic](/source/Pelagic).[2]
