# Lassus Mountains

The '''Lassus Mountains''' ({{coord|69|35|S|71|38|W|source:GNIS|display=inline,title}}) are a large group of mountains, {{Convert|15|nmi|km}} long and {{Convert|3|nmi|km|0}} wide, rising to {{Convert|2,100|m}} and extending south from [Palestrina Glacier](/source/Palestrina_Glacier) in the northwest part of [Alexander Island](/source/Alexander_Island), [Antarctica](/source/Antarctica). They overlook [Lazarev Bay](/source/Lazarev_Bay) and a few minor islands within the bay such as [Dint Island](/source/Dint_Island) and [Umber Island](/source/Umber_Island); [Haydn Inlet](/source/Haydn_Inlet) lies to the south while the [Havre Mountains](/source/Havre_Mountains) lie immediately north.

The mountains were probably first seen on 9 January 1821 by a Russian expedition under [Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen](/source/Fabian_Gottlieb_von_Bellingshausen). They were photographed from the air in 1936 by the [British Graham Land Expedition](/source/British_Graham_Land_Expedition) but mapped as part of the Havre Mountains. They were first mapped in detail, from air photos taken by the [Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition](/source/Ronne_Antarctic_Research_Expedition) (1947–48), by [D. Searle](/source/D._Searle) of the [Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey](/source/Falkland_Islands_Dependencies_Survey) in 1960, and were named by the [UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee](/source/UK_Antarctic_Place-Names_Committee) after [Orlandus Lassus](/source/Orlandus_Lassus), a Belgian [composer](/source/composer) of the 16th century.<ref name=gnis/>
