Thibos received bachelor's and master's degrees in [electrical engineering](/source/electrical_engineering) from the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan). He earned a Ph.D. in 1975 in physiological optics from the [University of California, Berkeley](/source/University_of_California%2C_Berkeley).
