# Large technical system

A **large technical system** (**LTS**) is a system or network of enormous proportions or complexity. The study of LTSs is a subdiscipline of [history of science and technology](/source/History_of_science_and_technology).

The book *[Rescuing Prometheus](/source/Rescuing_Prometheus)* by [Thomas P. Hughes](/source/Thomas_P._Hughes_(historian)) documents the development of four such systems, including the [Boston](/source/Boston) [central artery tunnel](/source/Big_Dig_(Boston,_Massachusetts)) and the Internet.
