'''Lapoinya''' (pronounced La-poin-ya) is a small agricultural centre on the north-west coast of [Tasmania](/source/Tasmania) west of [Wynyard](/source/Wynyard%2C_Tasmania). The name is [Tasmanian Aboriginal](/source/Aboriginal_Tasmanians) word for "fern tree", a plant that abounds in those surviving untouched parts of the original [temperate rainforest](/source/temperate_rainforest). At the [2006 census](/source/Census_in_Australia), Lapoinya had a population of 368.<ref name=Census2006Y>{{Census 2006 AUS|id=SSC65646|name=Lapoinya (State Suburb) |accessdate=14 November 2011|quick=on}}</ref>

==History==
First developed commercially around 1900, the town has been a centre for forestry, mixed agriculture (especially [potato](/source/potato)-growing), and grazing (mostly [dairy](/source/dairy) [cattle](/source/cattle)).

Lapoinya Post Office opened on 1 November 1912, and closed in 1970.<ref name="Post Office">{{Cite web |last=Premier Postal History |title=Post Office List |url=https://www.premierpostal.com/cgi-bin/wsProd.sh/Viewpocdwrapper.p?SortBy=NSW&country= |accessdate=16 June 2012 |publisher=Premier Postal Auctions}}</ref>

In November 2014, it was announced the town was fighting [Forestry Tasmania](/source/Sustainable_Timber_Tasmania) to attempt to stop the company logging the towns surrounding forest.<ref>{{cite news|title=Town fights bid to harvest much-loved trees|url=http://www.themercury.com.au/town-fights-bid-to-harvest-muchloved-trees/story-fnj3twbb-1227119933414|accessdate=11 November 2014|publisher=The Mercury|date=12 November 2014}}</ref> In January 2016, [Bob Brown](/source/Bob_Brown) and three others were arrested during an anti-logging protest on a 49-hectare Forestry Tasmania coupe at Lopoinya.<ref>{{Cite news|url=http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-25/bob-brown-arrested-at-tasmanian-logging-coupe/7112220|title=Bob Brown charged over Tasmania logging protest|date=2016-01-25|work=ABC News|access-date=2017-07-17|language=en-AU}}</ref>
