The population of the civil parish taken at the [2011 Census](/source/2011_Census_for_England_and_Wales) was 812.<ref name="NOMIS"/>  It is situated to the immediate north of [Boroughbridge](/source/Boroughbridge) on the [A168 road](/source/A168_road).

The village is mentioned in the ''[Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book)'' as ''Torp'' in the [Hallikeld](/source/Hallikeld) hundred. The lands were the possession of ''Gospatric, son of Arnketil'' both before and after the Norman invasion.<ref>{{OpenDomesday|OS=SE3867|name=langthorpe|display=Langthorpe|accessdate=2 January 2013}}</ref>

The village lies within the Wetherby and Easingwold UK Parliament constituency. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the [Borough of Harrogate](/source/Borough_of_Harrogate), it is now administered by the unitary [North Yorkshire Council](/source/North_Yorkshire_Council).

The 2001 UK Census recorded the parish population as 774 of which 638 are over sixteen years old and 412 of those were in employment.
