**Langila** is one of the most active [volcanoes](/source/Volcano) of [New Britain](/source/New_Britain), [Papua New Guinea](/source/Papua_New_Guinea). It consists of four overlapping [volcanic cones](/source/Volcanic_cone) on the eastern flank of an older extinct volcano, Talawe. Talawe is the largest volcano in [Cape Gloucester](/source/Cape_Gloucester_(Papua_New_Guinea)). There have been dozens of recorded eruptions since the 19th century from three separate [volcanic craters](/source/Volcanic_crater) at the summit of Langila. The most recent eruptive cycle of Langila began in August 2006 and continued into early 2007. Volcanic activity at Langila consists of [Strombo-Vulcanian](/source/Strombolian_eruption) and [Vulcanian eruptions](/source/Vulcanian_eruption) and [lava flows](/source/Lava). Langila is one of the most active volcanoes in the [Bismark archipelago](/source/Bismark_archipelago). The smallest crater is crater number 3.[2]

In the times of [German New Guinea](/source/German_New_Guinea), this volcano on the island then called [Neupommern](/source/Neupommern) was known by the name of **Ehlers-Berg** after the German discoverer and travel author from [Hamburg](/source/Hamburg), [Otto Ehrenfried Ehlers](/source/Otto_Ehrenfried_Ehlers).
