# Lanco, Chile

**Lanco** is a [city](/source/List_of_cities_in_Chile) and [commune](/source/Communes_of_Chile) in southern [Chile](/source/Chile) administered by the Municipality of Lanco. It is located in [Valdivia Province](/source/Valdivia_Province) in [Los Ríos Region](/source/Los_R%C3%ADos_Region), about 69 km (43 mi) northeast of [Valdivia](/source/Valdivia,_Chile) by road,[1] close to [Cruces River](/source/Cruces_River).

According to the 2002 [census](/source/Census) of the [National Statistics Institute](/source/National_Statistics_Institute_(Chile)), Lanco spans an area of 532.4 km2 (206 sq mi) and has 15,107 inhabitants (7,415 men and 7,692 women). Of these, 10,383 (68.7%) lived in [urban areas](/source/Urban_area) and 4,724 (31.3%) in [rural areas](/source/Rural_area). Between the 1992 and 2002 censuses, the population grew by 9.8% (1,350 persons).[2]

## Administration

As a commune, Lanco is a third-level [administrative division of Chile](/source/Administrative_division_of_Chile) administered by a [municipal council](/source/Municipal_council), headed by an [alcalde](/source/Alcalde) who is directly elected every four years. The 2008-2012 alcalde is Luis Cuvertino Gómez ([PS](/source/Socialist_Party_of_Chile)).[3][4]

Within the [electoral divisions of Chile](/source/Electoral_divisions_of_Chile), Lanco is represented in the [Chamber of Deputies](/source/Chamber_of_Deputies_of_Chile) by Alfonso De Urresti (PS) and Roberto Delmastro ([RN](/source/National_Renewal_(Chile))) as part of the 53rd electoral district, together with [Valdivia](/source/Valdivia,_Chile), [Mariquina](/source/San_Jos%C3%A9_de_la_Mariquina), [Máfil](/source/M%C3%A1fil) and [Corral](/source/Corral,_Chile). The commune is represented in the as part of the 16th senatorial constituency (Los Ríos Region).
