During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), Chu supervised research at MIT of many special antennas for use in radar and telecommunication applications.<ref name="mtt_bio"/> In 1945, he acted as a [United States Secretary of War](/source/United_States_Secretary_of_War) and headed the advisory specialist group to [United States Armed Forces](/source/United_States_Armed_Forces) in China.
