The islet is uninhabited, the only building being a [lighthouse](/source/Lampione_Lighthouse). Lampione is part of the [Riserva Marina Isole Pelagie](/source/Riserva_Marina_Isole_Pelagie), and its vegetation and wildlife are strictly protected. Animal species include the endemic [''Podarcis filfolensis'' ssp. ''laurentimulleri''](/source/Podarcis_filfolensis_ssp._laurentimulleri) (also found on Linosa), which is a subspecies of [Maltese wall lizard](/source/Filfola_lizard), numerous migrating birds, and the ''[Armadillidium](/source/Armadillidium) [hirtum pelagicum](/source/hirtum_pelagicum)'', a land [crustacean](/source/crustacean). The waters are populated by [shark](/source/shark)s, including the [sandbar shark](/source/sandbar_shark), [grouper](/source/grouper)s, [lobster](/source/lobster)s, and varieties of yellow and pink [coral](/source/coral).
